In January of 2015, Brooks Taylor and his wife Pilar, along with business partner Corey Hinkel, opened Birmingham Breadworks at 2408 7th Avenue South in Birmingham’s Southside. While Brooks was an electrical engineer and his wife was a graphic designer, they had both been baking at home for the past 30 years, and decided it was time to share their passion with the people of Birmingham. Brooks and Corey had been selling their bread every Saturday at the Pepper Place farmer’s market, so it was a natural progression to open their own bakery.
Birmingham Breadworks is a true artisan bakery, where everything is formed by hand and baked on the hearth. They offer a wide variety of specialty breads, a line of pastries, and a lunch menu consisting of soups, salads, sandwiches, and pizza by the slice. They also serve coffee and other beverages. Their full menu can be found on their website here. Their breads are also served in different restaurants around Birmingham.
Many customers have raved about how wonderful Birmingham Breadworks is, from the menu to the staff. One customer says, “This place is amazing! If you haven’t been, stop what you are doing right now and go! The Ham and Cheese Croissants are savory with a flaky crust, and the cream cheese Danishes are heaven in your mouth!” Another customer adds, “The Coconut and Hummingbird cakes are my favorite sweets in town. Sandwiches, Pizza, and bread are great as well. All that with a top notch, friendly staff make this one of the best places in Birmingham.”
When they opened in 2015, they had 2 employees, and have now grown to 20 employees. Their growth has been very organic, all driven by word of mouth referrals, which says a lot about their business. At Birmingham Breadworks, the entire staff is dedicated to consistency. They don’t cut corners when making the breads, they use no additives or conditioners, and they use as many organic and local products as possible on their menu.
Brooks is in the business on a daily basis, and invests a lot of time into the staff, whether he’s hiring, training, or working side by side with them. While he doesn’t do as much of the baking as he used to, he still helps wherever he’s needed. His wife Pilar plays a more behind-the-scenes role by creating recipes and helping train the staff on general production methods and techniques. When he’s not at the bakery, Brooks enjoys spending time at his farm and doing woodwork.
Birmingham Breadworks is open from 6:30am-5:30pm Monday through Saturday. Their bread is fresh and delicious, their staff is friendly and helpful, and they’d love to have you in for breakfast or lunch!
